4 Days 3 Nights Journey To Takawiri Island

This tour invites you to discover one of Kenya’s best-kept secrets—Takawiri Island, a tranquil paradise tucked away on Lake Victoria in Homabay County. Known for its white sandy beaches, gently swaying palm trees, and tropical ambiance, Takawiri offers the perfect lakeside escape with a coastal feel. Located off the shores of Mbita Town, the island is accessible by waterbus or private boat from Mbita Pier. Whether you’re departing from Nairobi, Eldoret, or any other town, Takawiri can be easily reached by flight to Kisumu or road transfers through the scenic routes of the Western circuit.

Day 1: Transfer to Mbita – Cross to Takawiri Island

Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your residence or airport, followed by a scenic drive or flight to Mbita Town in Homabay County. For those traveling by road, the journey winds through lush farmlands, gentle hills, and lakeside views, offering glimpses of life in western Kenya. Upon arrival in Mbita, you’ll board a waterbus or boat for a 30 to 40-minute cruise across the calm waters of Lake Victoria to Takawiri Island.

As you approach, Takawiri greets you with a postcard-perfect view—turquoise waters, untouched palm-lined shores, and powdery white sand beaches that feel more like the coast than an inland lake. Once you reach the island, you’ll check into Victoria Sands Takawiri Resort, a serene and intimate retreat nestled on the lakeshore.

Spend your afternoon relaxing at your own pace—take a stroll along the beach, dip into the crystal-clear waters, or simply settle in with a cool drink and enjoy the slow rhythm of island life. As the sun begins to set, gather at the lakeside for a magnificent sunset view over Lake Victoria, followed by a lakeside dinner and your first night on the island.

Day 2: Bird Island Boat Tour – Leisure on Takawiri

Wake up to the calming sounds of gentle waves and birdsong, then enjoy a hearty breakfast by the lake. The morning begins with a boat ride to Bird Island, a peaceful haven teeming with diverse bird species. This tiny island is a dream spot for bird lovers and nature photographers, offering close encounters with cormorants, kingfishers, herons, and many other water birds.

After returning from the excursion, enjoy a swim in the warm, shallow waters around Takawiri or relax under the palms on the soft white beach. Lunch is served at Takawiri Island Resort, with local and international options freshly prepared. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure, offering time to read, sunbathe, or walk the island’s trails.

In the evening, transfer by boat back to the mainland and return to Victoria Sands Lodge in Mbita for overnight. Watch the stars come out over the lake as the gentle night breeze sets in.

Day 3: Mbita to Rusinga – Tom Mboya Museum & Sunset Views

After an early breakfast, take the waterbus back to Mbita, where a short drive takes you to nearby Rusinga Island. Here, you’ll visit the Tom Mboya Mausoleum, a museum built in honor of one of Kenya’s most iconic political leaders. The site offers a glimpse into the life, career, and legacy of Tom Mboya, whose contributions to Kenya’s post-independence journey remain significant.

After the museum visit, spend the afternoon relaxing at Rusinga Island Lodge, known for its beautiful sunset views over Lake Victoria. As the day ends, enjoy dinner and a peaceful night at the lodge, taking in the quiet, natural beauty of the lake’s shoreline.

Day 4: Return Journey

Following breakfast, check out and begin your return journey. Whether you’re heading to Kisumu Airport for a flight or taking a road trip back through Homabay, Katito, and Ahero, the drive back offers time to reflect on the serene beauty and cultural richness you’ve experienced in Kenya’s western region.
