This four-day flying safari takes you into the heart of Northern Kenya, where the desert meets the water at the world’s largest permanent desert lake—Lake Turkana. With visits to Eliye Springs, the iconic Central Island, and a rich cultural tour of Lodwar town, this itinerary is designed to maximize your time and immerse you in the wild, remote charm of Turkana County. From volcanic islands to cultural monuments, prepare to uncover the raw, majestic beauty of Kenya’s northern frontier.
Day 1: Nairobi – Fly to Lodwar – Transfer to Eliye Springs
Your adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel or residence to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your morning flight to Lodwar. Upon arrival, you’ll be met by our team and transferred by road to Eliye Springs Resort, nestled along the western shores of Lake Turkana.
Eliye Springs is known for its natural freshwater springs that sustain green pockets of vegetation along the otherwise arid lake shore. This oasis supports a local community and offers a refreshing retreat in the north’s rugged landscape. After check-in, enjoy a delicious lunch and spend the afternoon unwinding on the sandy beaches or swimming in the lake’s cool waters.
Spend the night at Eliye Springs Resort, a perfect base to explore the Turkana region.
Day 2: Central Island National Park Excursion
After an early breakfast, depart for a full-day boat excursion to Central Island, also called Crocodile Island. This volcanic marvel rises from the blue-green waters of Lake Turkana, featuring three crater lakes—Crocodile Lake, Flamingo Lake, and Tilapia Lake. These isolated waters are crucial breeding grounds for the world’s largest population of Nile crocodiles.
The island’s eerie beauty is unmatched. Watch the moon rise over black lava beaches and smoking craters, surrounded by wild, untouched nature. Enjoy a picnic lunch as you soak in the haunting beauty and silence of this remote island paradise.
Return by evening to Eliye Springs Resort for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer to Lodwar – Lodwar Town City Tour
After breakfast, check out and transfer to Lodwar Town, the capital of Turkana County. Spend the day immersed in the region’s rich history and vibrant culture.
Visit the Turkana Cultural Centre, where you’ll gain insight into the unique lifestyle, traditions, and attire of the Turkana people through exhibitions and live demonstrations.
In the evening, check in at Cradle Tented Camp (or similar class) for dinner and overnight stay. Enjoy the quiet charm of Lodwar’s desert surroundings.
Day 4: Lodwar – Fly to Nairobi
After breakfast, transfer to Lodwar Airstrip for your return flight to Nairobi. This marks the end of your journey through the northern frontier. We’re confident you’ll return home with incredible stories, stunning photos, and memories that will last a lifetime.
