THE GREAT RIFT VALLEY EXPERIENCE

God outdid himself creating The Rift Valley.

The Great Rift Valley stretches over several thousand kilometers across Eastern Africa. It is one of the most significant geographical features in the world, formed by tectonic forces pulling the African continent apart. The dramatic escarpments, mountain highlands, indigenous forest, gorges, lakes and savannah contribute to its magnificent beauty.

As you travel through the valley you’ll experience some of the best features. You will come across the escarpment or rather the viewpoint and a few kilometres later; the smallest and oldest church in Kenya. It’s a Catholic church that was built by Italian slaves. 

A number of Lakes are found in The Rift;

Lake Elementaita is a stunning alkaline lake located in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. It’s known for its unique ecosystem and diverse wildlife, including flamingos, pelicans, and various bird species, making it a popular spot for birdwatching. The lake is surrounded by scenic landscapes, including rolling hills and acacia woodlands, and offers opportunities for hiking, picnicking, and photography. Additionally, Lake Elementaita is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Kenya Lake System, highlighting its ecological significance and natural beauty.

Naivasha boasts of a lake, a mountain, an Island and “hell”. You can enjoy boating on the lake as you birdwatch, have a wild walk on Crescent Island, hike on Mount Longonot then cycle, bike or rock climb in the Hell’s gate National park. You can visit one of Kenya’s farmhouses and go wine tasting at Leleshwa vineyard.

Lake Nakuru National park is a UNESCO Heritage . It was declared a Rhino sanctuary and later it started hosting the endangered Rothschild giraffe. It also boasts of flamingos and 450 species of terrestrial birds.

One could swim in the natural hot springs at Lake Magadi. You could also photograph the flamingos and the pink lake.

Lake Turkana is the last of the fresh water lakes in The Rift Valley. It is also the largest desert lake in the world. The water is a sparkling  blue-green color making it aesthetically pleasing. There are some archeological wonders and an array of wildlife.  One would also benefit from  interaction with some of Kenya’s most exotic and remote tribes.
