Set off early from Iten or Eldoret for a full-day adventure to Lake Nakuru National Park. Enjoy scenic drives through the Great Rift Valley and spend the day exploring the park’s rich wildlife—including rhinos, giraffes, buffaloes, and vibrant birdlife like flamingos and pelicans. Capture stunning views of the lake and landscapes before returning in the evening.
Departure Points: Iten or Eldoret
Your day begins with an early morning departure from either Iten or Eldoret, setting off toward Lake Nakuru National Park. The journey takes approximately three hours and passes through the scenic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of dramatic escarpments, fertile farmlands, and charming highland towns such as Kaptagat and Eldama Ravine.
Upon arrival at the park’s main gate, you will proceed with park entry formalities before starting a mid-morning game drive. Lake Nakuru National Park is renowned for its ecological diversity and spectacular wildlife. As you navigate through its acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and lakeside plains, your professional guide will help you spot a wide variety of animals including endangered black and white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, impalas, waterbucks, and olive baboons. With some luck, you may encounter the elusive tree-climbing lions that occasionally lounge on acacia branches.
Birdwatchers will appreciate the rich avifauna found in the park. Lake Nakuru is a Ramsar site and supports hundreds of bird species including greater and lesser flamingos, pelicans, African fish eagles, herons, and marabou storks.
Around midday, you’ll take a break for lunch. Depending on your package, this can be enjoyed as a picnic at a designated site within the park or as a buffet-style meal at one of the nearby lodges such as Sarova Lion Hill or Lake Nakuru Lodge. This is also a good time to rest and take in the serene beauty of the surrounding wilderness.
After lunch, the safari continues with an afternoon game drive. This session focuses on exploring lesser-known areas of the park and increasing your chances of spotting animals that may have been missed earlier. A visit to Baboon Cliff Viewpoint is often included, offering panoramic views of the lake, surrounding savannah, and the possibility of observing baboons, raptors, and other wildlife in the area.
Later in the afternoon, you will begin the return journey to Iten or Eldoret, arriving in the early evening. By the end of the trip, you’ll have experienced the natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and scenic wonders of Lake Nakuru National Park — all within the span of a single, memorable day.
