Lamu had always been on my bucket list. Perhaps it was the allure of a hidden paradise on the Kenyan coast that drew me in, or maybe it was the promise of sun, sea, and serene moments. Either way, I was finally here, and I couldn’t wait to explore every inch of this enchanting island.
Arrival and First Impressions
My flight landed mid-morning, and my journey to the hotel was seamless, thanks to Mohrale Tours and Travel. Having relied on their top-notch planning for my previous adventures, I knew I was in good hands. Eager to dive into my itinerary, I set out to make the most of my time in this idyllic setting.
Shela Beach Bliss
I kicked off my Lamu experience at Shela Beach, adorned in my stunning red swimsuit and intricately beaded sandals, which I left under a welcoming umbrella. The feeling of warm sand between my toes was blissful, and as I dipped into the cool, crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, I felt a wave of joy wash over me. I could’ve been a fish in that moment, reveling in the refreshing embrace of the sea.
As sunset approached, I traded the water for a traditional dhow sailing experience. With my camera ready, I captured the breathtaking sky, painted in hues that felt almost surreal. Each moment on the water was tranquil, and I knew I could never replicate the beauty I witnessed that evening.
A Culinary Delight
The following morning, the breakfast buffet was a feast for the senses. My plate overflowed with delicious treats: crispy bacon, a flavorful Spanish omelette, and refreshing tropical juice. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration.
Unique Creations and Cultural Experiences
My day began with visits to local designers, each promising something beautiful and unique. I had my heart set on a bespoke gown that would remind me of Lamu long after my return home.
No trip to Lamu would be complete without a donkey ride. I strolled through the narrow streets of Lamu Old Town, absorbing the vibrant atmosphere that felt reminiscent of Italy. I snapped countless photos of the intricately carved Swahili doors, each telling its own story, and I soaked in enough knowledge to inspire future writing.
Aquatic Adventures and Henna Tattoos
With anticipation bubbling inside me, I packed my tote bag with sunscreen, lotion, and snacks, ensuring I was ready for another day of adventure. After filling my water bottle, I set off for a trip to Manda Toto. The aquatic adventure on a traditional dhow was everything I hoped for and more. Swimming alongside a local, we explored the mesmerizing coral reefs and vibrant marine life, laughing and learning together.
Sailing towards Kipungani, I indulged in one of my favorite Lamu traditions: henna tattoos. There’s something incredibly soothing about the intricate designs as they come to life on my skin. Later, I found my sanctuary at the Cabanas, a tranquil haven nestled among nature’s embrace. As we sailed back, I was mesmerized by the sunset—a fiery ball that appeared to rest on the ocean, a true testament to nature’s artistry.
Embracing Lamu’s Nightlife
That night, I ventured out to experience Lamu’s vibrant nightlife. Sipping on kahawa tungu and swaying to the enchanting sounds of taarab music, I felt completely at home. Yet, the thought of returning to reality lingered in my mind, a bittersweet reminder that all good things must come to an end.
A Promise to Return
As my time in Lamu drew to a close, I reflected on the beauty, the culture, and the moments that would forever be etched in my heart. I knew I would return; Mohrale Travel and Tours would undoubtedly help me make it happen.
In the end, Lamu isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave. Until next time, my beloved Lamu.
