A TYPICAL CAMPING EXPERIENCE!

A typical camping experience

My nephew Miller just turned three. He is an answered prayer to his mom. Mercy longed to be a mom and when it turned out she was expecting, she was happy- overjoyed even. Every time she goes out of her way to make sure he’s well provided for.

Miller turned three on 10th October. I was grateful to see the both of them get this far. You know motherhood doesn’t come with a manual. I know how difficult some decisions can be to make. Most of the time you just believe that it will be okay, that it is the best for your child.

Late last year, Mercy moved to Australia for her Master’s Degree. She was afraid for her child but she wanted a better future for him. Miller has been under the care of our aunt. I know that she is at peace that he is well cared for and loved.

This birthday became a destination birthday. With the help of Mohrale tours we got to celebrate Miller in Ndaragwa- Nyahururu. This meant visiting a new place. Who doesn’t love to go to new places?

Friday morning was chilly and foggy but it didn’t dampen our spirits. We dressed warmly and hoped for good weather. The cake became a passenger and the seatbelt strapped around it was proof enough. I was tensed if we would get the cake to Nyahururu in one piece. My aunt had promised to babysit it literally to our destination.

Remember when we were young we would get excited that the trees were running in the opposite direction? Well, our children aren’t even interested in the scenery or what is going on outside the vehicle. Miller and Joy sang along to the songs from the speaker until sleep overtook them. Between the snacks and sleep there was no better contender.

We checked in to Lalanasi tented camp at 4 PM. It has drizzled and was too cold but we still wanted to be oriented. I wanted to learn the place better. I fear camping experiences because of the childhood stories about camping and yet there I was ready to enjoy my nephew’s birthday. An hour later I was ready to get some evening tea around the fire and play solitaire cards. One of the best evenings I enjoyed.

The wind howled, making the flames go hire. I enjoyed the heat guys we just know Nyahururu is kind of cold .. The orange flames with blue tips made the night look beautiful. The air was filled with music from the crickets. It was peaceful and fun. Probably because we all were about the same age. The games made it perfect.

“I slept with my head facing the door,” I told everyone.

They were baffled but in my case I was excited, I didn’t let claustrophobia deny me the experience. To be honest I was tensed but some candy crush frustrated me such that I forgot I was in a small space. A pat on the back for me.

The fun began in the morning and to be honest I enjoyed everything except for the horse ride. I felt imbalanced and thought I would fall over. I didn’t get to a quarter of the ride. Of all I enjoyed the quad bike. I realized I love speed, only when I am the one on the controls. I loved the wind in my face and the purr of the engine was good music to my ears. The adrenaline rushMiller was a great trooper too. The eight of us had a good time and that was proof enough because we got to close our eyes a little bit. Half way we decided to blast music and Solomon, Brenda and I sang our lungs out. We make good company. They made the trip fun and wholesome.

On my way home I kept thinking how much a quad bike would cost. Big dreams I know but I’d love to own one.

I enjoyed every little bit of the trip. Above all, I was happy that Miller had a great birthday, one day- we will show him pictures. I wish him a great year ahead. I wish mom, the grace of God as she brings him up. was out of this world.
