A Day trip To Mt Elgon National park

Spend the day exploring the wild beauty and hidden treasures of Mount Elgon National Park, a hidden gem straddling the Kenya-Uganda border — an ancient, extinct shield volcano offering stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage. Home to elephants, colobus monkeys, and a dazzling variety of bird species, Mount Elgon’s lush forests, roaring waterfalls, and mysterious caves create an unforgettable setting for hiking, nature walks, and birdwatching. The climate shifts from tropical warmth at lower elevations to cool alpine conditions at the summit, supporting a mosaic of diverse ecosystems – all within a day’s reach from Eldoret.

Early Morning: Departure from Eldoret

Depart from Eldoret early in the morning and head towards Mount Elgon National Park via Kitale, entering through the Chorlim Gate. The scenic drive takes you through lush farmland and charming rural landscapes.

Mid-Morning: Caves and Waterfalls Exploration

Begin your exploration on the lower forest circuit with key highlights:

  • Makingeny Caves
Marvel at the geological wonder of these bat-inhabited caves set within thick forest cover — a perfect spot for curious explorers and nature photography.
  • Chesurur Waterfalls
Enjoy the peaceful ambience of this hidden gem tucked in the forested slopes. The cascading waters and serene surroundings offer an ideal moment for relaxation and short walks.
  • Kitum Cave
Visit the park’s most famous cave, known for its salt-rich walls that attract elephants and other wildlife. With luck, you might spot signs of recent animal visits or even encounter wildlife nearby.

Midday: Picnic Lunch and Bluff Viewpoint

Enjoy a packed picnic lunch in a designated forest clearing, surrounded by the fresh, crisp air of the highlands.

After lunch, take a short guided hike to Endebess Bluff. This gentle 1.6 km uphill walk rewards you with panoramic views of the plains below — a perfect snapshot moment and a chance to breathe in the beauty of the landscape.

Afternoon: Wildlife Viewing & Return

On your way back through the park, stop briefly at the Elephant Platform — a popular spot for observing elephants as they approach the caves in the late afternoon. It’s a peaceful vantage point to take in the raw beauty of nature.

Begin your drive back to Eldoret in the late afternoon, arriving by early evening.
